Two of my videos are part of this Africa collection:
Mr. Samir features the Step Pyramid of Djoser as it stands today, a main site of the burial grounds of Saqqara, the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, which is nowadays mainly known as an attraction frequented by international tourists. In a post-25-January Cairo, however, the trust and warmth once extended to ‘foreigners’ yields to suspicion bordering on paranoia, and innocent inquiries take on a threatening undercurrent; here indirectly extended by the unseen authority on-site in Saqqara, who is referred to only as “Mr. Samir.” This video deals with the subjects of authority (ancient, recent past, and present) and its literal and figurative structures.
ROAR 2.0 uses segments of the official interviews conducted with all African contestants of the 2010 Miss Universe pageant and acts as a form of social commentary. Through simple re-editing of both the audio and video tracks of the source material, this work aims to reflect humorously on the proverbial scale, which appears to be increasingly tipping in favor of short-lived fame over dignity. ROAR 2.0 reads this condition as a re-boot of colonialism: same concept, different battleground.
